Environmental Technician
Responsibilities
- To carry out site air monitoring and water and soil sampling on a range of contaminated land sites throughout the UK.
- To supervise and keep photographic and drawing logs of excavations/remediation areas.
- To carry out calibrations and checks on monitoring equipment.
- To maintain records on electronic data management system and paper information system and compile factual reports on all work carried out on site.
- To maintain a level of knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform the duties of the post and keep abreast of legal and technical developments.
- To undertake the duties in such a way as to enhance and protect the reputation and public profile of EDSR.
- To undertake such other relevant duties as may from time to time be required.
- Report project progress through verbal contact with the Environmental Project Manager.
Attend environmental team meetings as required.
- Carry out administrative duties in accordance with the post.
Location
- Will be required to attend various projects throughout the UK.
Experience
- Posses a degree in environmental or earth science or similar discipline.
- Experience in soil and water sampling and/or air monitoring.
- Experience in soil logging to BS5930 or Eurocode.
- Experience writing Phase 1 and 2 reports for contaminated land.
- Be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples within a curriculum vitae, of at least one year's experience of working in an environmental monitoring role.
- Geotechnical knowledge and demonstrable experience of the interface of contaminated land with the wider development issues of brownfield sites.
- Be familiar with relevant codes of practice and industry standards.
Personal skills
- The ability to communicate effectively, with the capacity to listen to and to assimilate information, including the ability to compose reports on complex issues in a clear and factual manner.
- The ability to undertake required tasks independently whilst working to a specific project strategy.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to work unsupervised.
- A good working knowledge of IT packages such as Word and Excel.
- The ability to make decisions in relation to their own methods of working and have a practical approach to problem solving.
- A team player with the ability to work with others and quickly establish credibility at all levels - a self starter with a 'can do' attitude.
- A commitment to achieving the core objectives of the environmental department.
- Comfortable with working outdoors in all weathers.
- This post requires applicants to hold a full UK driving licence. Depending on works location, a suitable vehicle will be made available for official business, which will enable the applicant to meet the requirements of the post in full.
